History from a Bus

Continuing the theme of the bus tour, I started thinking about how much tours and field trips really bring learning to life. A simple field trip opens up so many more learning opportunities by involving more of the senses. It helps develop a spatial awareness not possible from a mere map. It allows touch and sight and smell. One of my favourite experiences was a trip to York with the family. We took in Jorvik which is a veritable assault on the senses. I also took my son to Towton Field where we got a sense of the scale and terror of a medieval battle.

This is something we try to include in corporate learning and development too. Use of more of the senses, for instance a simple walk through which involves learners moving from one place to another in the training room, will help to embed the learning. In children, as well as embedding the learning this kind of activity can help to develop a deeper understanding and ultimately even a love of the subject. I think!
